Russian Foreign Minister says US actions in Syria illegal
Sergey Lavrov, Russia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that actions of the United States in Syria are illegal, Russian News Agency TASS reported Wednesday.

Speaking at a press conference following talks with his counterparts from Turkey and Iran, Lavrov said that actions of Washington in Syria “run counter to international law.”

“The US and members of the US-led coalition are stationed in Syria illegally, contrary to the position of the Syrian legitimate government,” he said.

Lavrov suggested that the US troops are in Syria for only one reason which is Syria’s natural resources and that their presence not approved by the Syrian government. “If we consider the statements about the necessity to ‘protect’ oil fields in Syria, it looks like they are ‘protecting’ them from the Syrian Arab Republic itself,” Lavrov said.

“Experts in the United States have started a discussion on how to assess everything that is going on right now. Experts stated their opinion, and we absolutely agree with it. They cite rulings of international courts on similar situations. Those rulings say that any exploitation of natural resources of a sovereign state without the state’s permission is illegal,” he added.

According to Lavrov, Iran, Turkey and Russia, whose troops are also present is Syria, positioned their troops in Syria following the legal process. “The Sochi agreements — both on Idlib a year ago, and on the Syrian-Turkish border on October 22 — were approved by the government in Damascus, personally by President Assad, as well as by Kurds.”

Foreign Minister went on to note that Russian military presence in Syria is “aimed at achieving peace, ensuring Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
